When I saw her shy and silent I knew she was speaking, and when she noticed my silence, that I said nothing, she knew I was saying everything. We talked and dreamed, not knowing the world was already making its plans for us.

Les jours de la diaspora

The tarboosh, there, shut away in a dark wardrobe; and he, here, like a dead man in a lodging where the air is stale and damp, with no world of his own in the great world he lives in, Paris that they call the city of light, except a bed, a bathroom and a table where he gulps down his food whenever they call him.

Les jours de la diaspora

Anyone who saw me this morning, set on leaving, would never guess I was this rag now flung across a seat in a corner of the airport. As if a part of me, from the very start, had refused to go.

Les jours de la diaspora

I had never seen his face, so I made it myself: the eyes, the brow, the forehead, thick black hair. I knew neither his height nor his build nor the tone of his voice, so my heart invented them, until my inner mind believed that this figure looming before me was my father.

Les jours de la diaspora

After you've finished your errand with Umm Hasan, I want you to stand at this tram stop for half an hour or more, and just keep looking around you, at the shops in front and behind, and the people getting on and off the tram.

Les jours de la diaspora

Have you ever heard, Yaqoub Effendi, of people stealing a whole country? Not a watch, or a car, or even a house: a country! A whole country, Yaqoub Effendi, with its land and its people, its sea and its sky, its summer and its winter!

Les jours de la diaspora

Yes, I have French citizenship. But whoever says I feel at ease here, living among my own people, is a liar. Their language isn't mine, their ways aren't mine, their life isn't mine; I'm not of them and they're not of me. I'm like a lost man walking along, looking left and right.

Les jours de la diaspora

I don't know whether this was my nature, or whether I looked on money as a shelter to hide in during my exile. For who did I have? A decrepit grandfather, a mother who had emigrated to her new world, and a country where I had no one at all.

Les jours de la diaspora

You know, Galal my boy, I wore my feet out in this Opera Square... Not this Opera, the one in Egypt! There was a shop for watch parts behind the Khazindar mosque and I was back and forth to it, and my route ran through Opera Square.

Les jours de la diaspora

I am Zaki son of Ishaq son of Yusuf son of Harun son of Sham'un al-Azra'. Every one of them was born and lived in Egypt and never left it, never went right or left; at most they went to the mulid of Abu Hasira once a year and came home to their houses and their work. How long must I go on shouting, people, world, creatures of God: this country is mine just as it is yours!

Les jours de la diaspora

I join the ranks of the marginal, the riff-raff and the hard-up who fill Barbès station at this early hour and know nothing of manners or tact. They kick, stamp and elbow their way onto the Métro, and the sweat and smells that assault the nose never tell you that you are in the land of light and perfume.

Les jours de la diaspora

The snow covered everything and gathered in heaps, until you no longer knew whether you were facing something you might one day grow fond of, or at least get used to, or a mighty enemy: something cold and dead, whose whiteness reminds you of shrouds.

Les jours de la diaspora

I loved Paris while she was deaf and did not feel me; and when I came to her she took Nadia from me and gave me Rachel! Nor was that enough: she put me forward for the job of a servant, for a shop boy is a servant, or nearly so.

Les jours de la diaspora

My grandfather's chair is empty, his bed is empty, and my heart too is empty. If only I had simply become alone and that were the end of it, for loneliness, if it is only loneliness, can be borne; but desolation took hold of me, and loss destroyed me.

Les jours de la diaspora

What is it that made Sheikh Menji, so strong and solid, fall as leaves fall in autumn, and brought my mother's people to him in their black clothes? What is it that joins the near to the far, turns the enemy into a tender visitor, carries us from one state to another so that we bow our heads, silent and dazed, leaning on one another, and draws out of each of us the best that is in him?

Les jours de la diaspora

They were sweet days, Galal. You couldn't tell the Muslim from the Jew from the Christian; no grudges, no 'what's my creed and what's yours'. Everyone lived his life, and the Lord was not Cohen's alone, nor Ali's, nor Nassif's: the Lord was the Lord of all. I don't know why the world's goodness has run so thin.

Les jours de la diaspora

I reckon God has decreed that I die in this foreign country, so, my son, I beg you by God not to leave me alone here. Take my body back to Egypt; we have a tomb there in al-Basatin, ask for it, the tomb in the name of my father Ishaq al-Azra'; its key is enclosed with this letter. Do whatever you can: go to the embassy, send a telegram to the minister, to the president, to anyone; tell them that Zaki al-Azra', the dead stranger, wants to come home.

Les jours de la diaspora

Religion is one thing and the heart another. These hearts of ours, my son, are one of God's secrets, and what religion does not join, a pure, clean heart bound to God will join; for in all of us, from Adam to the youngest newborn, there is a breath from God, whether we are Muslims or Christians or Jews or anyone else, so long as they are God's creatures.

Les jours de la diaspora

It was the first suitcase I had packed, the night before. I began with the pyjamas my grandfather was wearing when he died, then a grey long-sleeved shirt he loved, the wedding ring and the Jovial watch; the tarboosh I put in a stiff cardboard box that I carried in my other hand. I wanted to go home with these things of his, and keep them in his old wardrobe.

Les jours de la diaspora

All I care about now is how to please my Lord. And to set your mind at rest I'll tell you something simple, something our good plain folk back home have known and said for ages: when God allows you to go back to Egypt, walk into any mulid or any gathering and you'll hear them with your own ears saying: Moses is a prophet, Jesus is a prophet, Muhammad is a prophet, and whoever has a prophet, let him pray for him.

Les jours de la diaspora

I left myself to the days. I kept saying: perhaps it will forget her, perhaps Khadija will drive her out, perhaps and perhaps, with the days; and it never crossed my mind that there were no more days. Then death devoured Khadija, and the pain became two pains: the pain of parting and the pain of conscience.

Les jours de la diaspora

It was an unfamiliar sight: he stood there, stout, in his cloak, the turban's shawl wound round his short Maghrebi tarboosh, lips murmuring, a few metres from a Jewish clergyman in a black suit with a skullcap the size of a handkerchief folded in four, and both of them nodding up and down, reading the prayers over my grandfather.

Les jours de la diaspora

I hold that the Jew is one person and the Zionist another, and my grandfather was a living example in flesh and blood of the righteous Jew who took in a needy Muslim orphan like me, eased every path in life for him as far as he could, and even preferred him over his own full-blooded grandchildren. My grandfather, who never set the religion he loved against the homeland where he was born and raised: both were sacred to him and deserving of respect.

Les jours de la diaspora

To my grandfather and other devout Jews I am a Jew, since one of their women bore me. A Jew! No matter how much I pray and fast, even if I memorise the whole Qur'an; what is written on my birth certificate will not plead for me, nor my declaring by mouth and tongue, by paper and pen, that I am a Muslim! A Muslim! A Muslim!

Les jours de la diaspora

I did not know that my heart, which is part of me, had hidden her in its folds; and when it sensed I had drifted with the days, no longer yearning or remembering our pledge, it began to reopen the wounds and release her, so that her ghost would appear to me or she would come to me in a dream.

Les jours de la diaspora

I bow down before God and beg Him to save me from the evil in myself, so that I may be hers wholly and not in part. Day by day I grow tender towards her, as if something is happening between us: not the love that roars and topples like a wave, nor the love that clears and thins until you see the bottom. Something I watch growing; not the love that is born big and whose end we never know.

Les jours de la diaspora

Even Paris: I grew weary of her. She meant to me the luxury car, the easy life, and money added to my bank balances. And what is all that worth without a heart that rejoices in your joy, an eye that looks on you with tenderness, or the palm of a hand that feels your forehead when you are unwell?

Les jours de la diaspora

When we build big projects that spread good across the country, you call us Egyptians! When we draw in, shut our doors and mind our own business, you say 'ah, those sons of so-and-so, Jews! Jews!' And when Israel comes up, you call us Zionists fit for burning! So, good people, one of us is looked at as having no identity: his identity is the size of his deeds, and his deeds are measured by your whims and your interests.

Les jours de la diaspora

Who are you, boy? And whose son? Mahmoud Effendi who planted your seed, or Zaki al-Azra' who took you in and raised you? To which branch do you belong now? Your people in Mansuriya know nothing of you, nor you of them, and your people here are the same or worse. So to whom do you belong? And how many francs do you have now, Ustaz? Can they make a finger, or even a nail paring, of someone who loves you as your grandfather did?

Les jours de la diaspora

They had nothing left but her. She was their solace and their longing, the stab of pain and the ghost of hope; she was the sun that had set, and they felt no warmth any more. She comes to them when they are alone in their homes; she speaks to them and they speak to her; she tempts them and they believe her; she beckons, and she is a mirage.
