Faces that had escaped the angel of death, legs thin and brittle as sticks of firewood, no mass of thigh or calf or any buttocks at all; such things were luxuries as far as they were concerned.

He would not dare sit before a grave that had owners in the village; it would draw attention and they would take it as intrusion, so he chose the grave of this stranger to remember loved ones who had gone and let out the grief that hurt him.

For all their meanness to him at times and the embarrassments they caused him with Master Habashi, they filled his life and kept him from drifting back into the old world he had lived in before he came to us.

It was not love, though it seemed so to him; it was something different, deeper and perhaps wider and more spacious than the love we know. It was need, and need, if it lasts and goes on, may give birth to a great affection; the reverse is not always true.

The walls were as they were first built, raw brick plastered with mud and straw, the roof resting on six palm trunks, and all of it, end to end, trellised with eucalyptus branches and dry firewood over two or three wooden beams.

She is the only smile in his life now; how often she came in while he slept and tucked the cover around him, and he would feel her and pretend to sleep, savouring what she did, and when she left him he kept watching her as she stepped out.

Le café de Habachi

I hoped for God's relief and an honest living, and praise and thanks to You, Lord: You showed me mercy and perhaps You forgave me. People! People are my problem in this life! Not one of them, old or young, ever respected me or had a crumb of mercy in his heart!

At that time there was nothing in my world to make me regret anything, but it was the aching voice and the sad tune; they gripped my heart and I could not move from where I stood until Asmahan had finished.

It was the poor who welcomed him; he looked much as they did and served them for God's sake alone, taking neither a half-piastre nor a piastre from them, and if they pressed and slipped something into his pocket he took it as an insult.

Since we were carried on our mothers' shoulders we have been looking at it; nothing happens in the village without being told there, and even news from the hamlets around us reached it within the hour, or the next day at the latest.

Down below we watched him in awe, dazzled by the performance; he seemed to us one of the acrobats we saw at the big saints' fairs, not poor Dahi who had been running with us a moment before.

Thirty years have passed since those events and the nickname is still alive today; he sees it in people's eyes along with a few smiles, and they all but say it aloud whenever he rubs up against them or picks a quarrel.

Le café de Habachi

A simple scene, helpless and powerless: a girl with plaits and a school pinafore and a voice that rings like a child's lisp; yet it is stronger than he is, stronger by far, its strength lying in its power to kill the moment of evil whenever it bears down on him.

Le café de Habachi

Each raised a hand in greeting, their eyes met without a word, yet the thing was done: Yusuf's eyes felt for him and consoled him, and he felt relief; he needed someone to be gentle with him.

Le café de Habachi

This café never leaves the memory, nor does the day we gathered in front of it from early morning, six or seven boys who had slipped out of our houses to wait for the lorry coming from town with the funeral-tent gear on its back.

Le café de Habachi

And the café was pulled down. Yet it stayed in people's memory; they had frequented it a lifetime and its details lived on in their hearts, though the new owner wiped it off the face of the earth and built in its place a new café he called the One-Armed Man's Café.
