In His Words

Lines copied word for word from his novels, each tied to its book and chapter. What a narrator or a character says belongs to the novel’s world, not to the author’s opinions.

People like Grandfather Abdellatif will never fade from memory. And not only people: other things, perhaps small and meaningless to others, mean much to me; the tone of a voice whose owner has gone, a reproachful look, a word that hurt me then and still does, even the wooden door that stood between us and the grandfather's quarters, still there with its aching, pleading creak.

Unforgettable Days

His soul was in the land; he loved it as he loved us. If the worm spread through the cotton stalks one year, or a planting failed, grief settled over him and we could not go near him. Fifty years the land was his eye and his strength, until weariness overtook him.

Unforgettable Days

Just as the present has its people, whom we see and who see us, whom we speak to and who speak to us, the past too has its people; they live in us as much as we live, they have presence and existence, and if we wish we see them, they speak to us and we speak to them.

Unforgettable Days

He called out to her as though she were there with us in the room. The throes of death, hallucinations, perhaps. But not for him: he seemed to see her truly, or at the very least to sense her by some way other than sight and eyes.

Unforgettable Days

He loved her. She was no daughter of the great houses, a peasant girl from a simple home; he met her by chance and grew attached, and fought the whole world for her: his father, his mother, and every relative we had.

Unforgettable Days

We knew his coughs by heart. Each cough had its own musical mode: one told us he was coming from afar and we should pay attention, another opened his speech, and a cough of warning came whenever he sensed a line had been crossed.

Unforgettable Days

I remember all their names and at times forget them; the faces too, some clear, some clouded; and some vanish for years then suddenly appear, for no reason and without my even summoning them.

Unforgettable Days

The child living inside me was far stronger than I: the child whom death kicked, snatching away the grandmother who told him bedtime stories; to this day, after all these years, he still reminds me of the tone of her voice and the trembling of the spoon in her hand as she fed herself.

Unforgettable Days

He had evolved from within, compensating for the sight that old age had worn out. He had trodden the village lanes all his long life, and maps upon maps were stacked in his head: every street, alley and passage, the entrances, exits and bends.

Unforgettable Days

He patted my shoulder tenderly and asked me to go home so they would not worry; but I stayed, and he felt I was consoling him, so he forced a laugh as if to tell me nothing was wrong, and though he laughed I glimpsed a tear springing from his eyes.

Unforgettable Days

What truly drew me was the grandfather's quarters: though it was only a mud-brick building, a meaningless building peering at us from behind the wooden door, it gave me my first lesson in questioning and curiosity.

Unforgettable Days

Our house was not merely a house, a heartless thing of ceilings, walls and wooden windows, but a whole life with a soul, a pulse and feelings: a life in which I drew my first breath, my first smile, my first laugh, my first touch, my first everything; a life that knew me before I could crawl.

Unforgettable Days

It was as if I stood on the edge of a bottomless well, a riddle among riddles. I had never seen anyone die before me, never tried this great thing, nor knew the meaning of the word death itself; I had heard it only in tales and bedtime stories.

Unforgettable Days

I hear that one of them has died and his face presses on me night and day; I drift with him into the distant past, and things of his from thirty, forty years ago float up before me, trifles and miniatures I never imagined existed in memory, as though the man were alive inside me without my feeling it.
