Unforgettable Days
Unforgettable Days
The grandfather's name was never used among us; it would have sounded strange had we heard it, and no one in the village called him by it. He was only ever 'His Honour the Omda' or 'Abu al-Hajj'.
Unforgettable Days
I remember this now and it does not surprise me: the grandfather surrounded me on every side; I saw no one in the world but him.
Unforgettable Days
That stick will never be lost from memory: how often he shooed us grandchildren with it, or waved it angrily in our faces; we fled from him like mice, and woe to us if his hands caught up with us.
