All he owned was five buffaloes; they found four in his pen and the fifth shot dead in the drainage canal. The poor thing had slipped out of the pen and dived into the canal to bathe, and it was we who gunned her down! The case was filed against persons unknown.

Port Said emptied as a perfume bottle empties of the contents that give it its worth. It was strange to the ear, the eye and all the other senses that life should stop like this, or at the very least that the movement should fade, and with it the companionship, the reassurance and the familiarity; nothing remained in the town, in all its length and breadth and sky and sea, but a few people and a handful of shops, cafés and stores.
That is what Port Said did to us: she made us run seven or eight years ahead of our age, and know that there is something in this world as dear as our fathers and mothers.
God willing we'll win, and everything will go back the way it was.
That day my heart wept real tears, for I had never seen death so criminal, so brutal to a human being: it spared neither the face nor the chest nor the back, nor pardoned a single limb.
A magic from a world not our own, none of whose secrets we understand, not even the secret within us that lets us merge with it; a magic in which we live with the dead, whether places or people, as if we see them and they see us, we speak to them and they to us, and we wade on foot not only into distant places but into distant times.
Yes, habibi, I fight, and why not! I fight and set the whole world on fire! A criminal attacks my house and wants to sit in it by force and by the throat, and what do I do? Put my tongue in my mouth, sit on a chair and watch him?
When we passed Ismailia and came alongside the Canal the whole bus fell silent; passengers looked at one another, some gazing from the window in grief. The enemy was on the far bank, raising a wall between us and him (the Bar Lev Line), and a boat lay sunk in the channel, half buried in the water, the other half thrust upward with flocks of gulls above it.
Such was my state, and the state of the other unarmed civilians, all through the days of the war: death shared our lives, ate and drank with us, took a liking to us; he liked our streets and our houses, even our small children pleased him and he wanted to play with them. The accursed thing found us charming, and his breath mingled with ours morning and evening.
What is certain is that heavy blows were being dealt to the enemy from somewhere in Port Said, with this thunder and this shaking of the air; everything else was legend the people invented, and I do not know why they imagined the machine, or machines, that did it as a cannon and took such pains to draw its shape.
He whispered to the others to stay hidden where they were, then crawled and crept until he reached the embrasure and stopped its mouth with his body. He took not tens of bullets but hundreds from the gun barrel that jutted from it, and stayed propped against it even after he died. An act that would not happen even from a madman.
My brother's face appears and I look at the watch around my wrist. His watch! He never saw it, never rejoiced in it; his birthday was near and I bought it for him, but he did not come back, he went into the absence from which no one returns. I would not put it away: the warmth of my hand is kinder to it than drawers and wardrobe shelves.
And truth came and falsehood perished. And joy dawned, yes by God it dawned. The world smiled on us, and month after month the people came back, and the streets became like the streets of Cairo and Alexandria and all our towns in the Delta and the Valley: crowd upon crowd, the cafés, the shops, the mosques and the churches packed to the last inch.
For me the parting is the parting from my brother, the reconnaissance officer who went in the first days of the '67 war; he went without our finding a body or anything bearing his scent as he died, no tunic, no shirt, no handkerchief, no word in a letter he had meant to send us, but death came first.
Port Said, habibi, is mother and father; I know nothing else in this world. Bread and salt with the people here; my wife I married from here, the daughter of al-Muqaddis Labib the junk dealer. I am not Cotarelli the big tobacco merchant or Stavrides the timber importer; those people have money and houses in Europe and America and can live there. I am poor, habibi, and if ruin comes to Port Said, ruin comes to Tudri.
What troubled her, and what she wanted to have her say on, was that if we want justice we must put ourselves in the other side's place; and that just as our religion forbids a certain thing, we must not blame the other for taking the same course. This was her right, and her dignity would not let her manoeuvre or dissemble about it.
Uncle Tudri is one of us: his blood is our blood and his ways are our ways, the good and the bad; the same kindness, the same hot-blooded gallantry and the manners of the sons of the country, and the same chatter too, the swearing by God in truth and in falsehood, the nose poked into other people's business.
How the cafés of Port Said drew me! The baladi cafés: al-Silkawi, al-Yasqi, Imran and so on, and above all the Fallah café where Eugénie Street meets Muhammad Ali Street, which pulsed with life as though all of Egypt were sitting in it, chatting with itself.
Port Said 68الوطن..
Homeland. Dignity. Pride. Struggle. Big words, no doubt, and we had heard them often from a teacher at school, from a father, an uncle, and from people who never stopped talking about them on the radio after every news bulletin. […] We understood them when they struck Port Said.
All of Port Said is enchanting, not only the Gianola: like a beautiful girl who teases you with her femininity, her coquetry and her sheer dresses, and with her modesty and good manners at the same time. A hard equation, no doubt, but that spoilt, mischievous Port Said could manage it; so she was, or at least in the time I am telling of.
Empty, cold, no breath leaving it or entering, no movement, no sound, not even a cough, the room that once seethed with crowds coming and going like a beehive or an ants' nest. A young officer with a lieutenant's rank is all there is in it, folded in on himself behind my old desk, with no meaning, no authority and no worth without the people.
We joined night to day, with the dead and wounded in their hundreds, old and young, nursing boys and girls who knew nothing of this world but their mothers' nipples, and rubble and dust filling the air, and the smell of gunpowder.
She followed him; grief killed her. She did not shed a single tear, the tears failed, and would that they had not! A week later she collapsed on her face, and within months she left us. My laughing, cheerful father, so fond of life, lived long years after that, but who was it that lived and stayed with us? Someone else, with nothing of my father in him: silent, sullen, his spirit crushed.
That day was the first of August 1968, and the first day I saw Port Said with my eyes; it was my heart that had known her before.
My grief was sharpest for one child among the victims: he lay stretched on a pavement with his hands around his head, gone from this life. He died of a moment of fear; he fell as he ran in terror from the screaming of the planes and his head struck the kerb. He was killed by the villain in Ray-Ban glasses circling high above, and a blind, heartless pavement shared in the deed.
I bent and kissed his hand several times; I had never done that before except with my father. He was my father in those moments. That was the last time I saw him: a few days later the orderly came in with the coffee he had ordered minutes before and found him as if asleep in his chair, his reading glasses fallen into his lap, his head tilted onto his chest. He had died.
We are men, Captain, and we never bring harm to one who has thrown himself on our protection, even if they cut our throats with the sword.
And an old woman who stands all day at the café entrance behind a table of socks, handkerchiefs and women's wares bared her head without meaning to, without even noticing, and let out a trill of joy that rang through the sky; before we knew it we were all clapping for her. I did not tell my hands to clap; they did it without my feeling.
The sea, in its length and breadth and depth, is a planet of its own. No word, no phrase, no book of pure explanation can do it justice. Rugged, salt, deep, its heart a lump of iron that knows neither mercy nor gentleness; wade into it when its mood is bad and it will tear you apart, and there is no trusting it even when it smiles kindly or dozes with its eyes shut.
Papa and Mama are buried here in the Greek cemetery, and my son Minas too, three years old; sorrow and joy, all of it, all of it, here. Greece is a country I love very much, but where is it, habibi? Only on a map, a paper map; the map of the heart has something else on it.
And death was stronger than she was; against whom could she rage? Against a martyr with God? Or against a daughter whose back was broken? She accepted.
A boy whose head barely reached the middle of your chest, with a sandal on his foot worth no more than three pounds, and yet before him you were small. He beat you.
The next day we did not find the pictures in their places; when we reproached him he put them back, and surprised us by hanging beside them a picture of the holy Kaaba. Before we could open our mouths he said: 'This is a gift from me; when the war is over, take it with you.' A shiver ran through me at what he had done, and Galal Bey rose and kissed him on the forehead.
Forgive me, Pasha, but this is Port Said: my mother, my father and my honour.
We were taken aback by dozens of people streaming towards us, old men and women among them, all determined to surround the missile and protect it: one man or woman feeling it with their hands as we pushed them away, one woman who looked it over and ran home with three or four others behind her and came back with bed sheets, quilts and blankets, another who tore a curtain from her window, all of them wanting to cover the missile and hide it from the enemy's eyes.
And belongings and odds and ends flung about: key rings, wallets, a wall clock with its glass smashed and its hands dead, a handful of nails and nuts in a plastic bag, a sock, one shoe, the head of a sewing machine, hangers with a nightshirt or trousers or a shirt still on them, and rulers and pens and books and exercise books.
He was asleep on a stone bench beside the tomb, and a strange sleep it was: head between his arms, knees drawn up to the middle of his belly, the posture of a foetus in its mother's womb. Feelings unrelated to one another came over me, pity upon astonishment upon curiosity upon sorrow, and it never crossed my mind that this human being would one day stand by me in a way I could never forget.
Port Said 68إيش تقول!
What are you saying! God shame you! These are not in the keeping of your hand nor mine nor any man's; these are in the palm of God now, my son.
Day after day an intimacy grew between me and the place. The streets: Eugénie Street and al-Talatini, or Kisra and Muhammad Ali, and houses from the thirties and forties of the last century, the kindly, gentle houses with their arcades and wooden balconies, and the shops of al-Tugari Street no bigger than cigarette packets, each holding a thousand and one kinds of goods.
We said too that perhaps by this thumbprint he meant that no one but she should open the letter, or perhaps he felt the end drawing near and wanted to send her something of himself and of the earth he died in. Perhaps. Maybe. As if.
