This unwelcome visitor, the mysterious, treacherous, hidden one who kills us without our seeing him: where is he? Here with us? Or does he dwell in some corner of this sky?

Unvergessliche Tage
Unvergessliche Tage
The grandfather's name was never used among us; it would have sounded strange had we heard it, and no one in the village called him by it. He was only ever 'His Honour the Omda' or 'Abu al-Hajj'.
Unvergessliche Tage
That stick will never be lost from memory: how often he shooed us grandchildren with it, or waved it angrily in our faces; we fled from him like mice, and woe to us if his hands caught up with us.
Unvergessliche Tage
He never once came to mind without my being in the fullest state of welcome, flooded with a delicious melancholy, as if time were another time, I the small boy, and the grandfather returned to life.
