As if something unseen were carrying me off to another world than the one I was in; something flowing through my veins, flooding me from end to end, right and left, loosening me, rocking me, numbing me, melting me.

ارجع لبلادك يا وليدي. ولي (اصبح) طبيب وللا مهندس وأكبر في بلادك. مهما كبرت في باريس ومهما عملت متوصلش حتى حاجة.

Go back to your country, my boy. Become a doctor or an engineer and grow big in your own country. However big you grow in Paris, whatever you do, you will never amount to anything.

والذي سحرني أيامها ولا يزال باقيًا في أُذُنِي إلى الآن. هو صوتُ الشيخ الدمنهوري. لم أكُنْ أعرف أن ما يتلوه هو القرآن. انجذبت إليه دون أن أفهم ما يقول.

What enchanted me in those days, and still lingers in my ear, was the voice of Sheikh al-Damanhouri. I did not know that what he recited was the Quran; I was drawn to him without understanding a word.
