يا ستِّي هنا ولَّا هناك آهي كلها عيشة وكلنا ولاد آدم وحَوَّا.

Here or there, my dear, it is all one life, and we are all children of Adam and Eve.

وكأن قدميَّ قد خفَّتا وأطير في الهواء. وأدخل دفعةً واحدة في بكاءٍ ونشيجٍ ولا أكفُّ عن الصياح بأعلى صوتي: لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله.

As if my feet had grown light and I were flying; all at once I broke into weeping and sobbing, and could not stop shouting at the top of my voice: there is no god but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God.

وقال: إنه رأى الأوبرا مرتين. رآها من الخارج بالطبع. وهي دارٌ فخمةٌ ولا مثيلَ لها في مصر. لكن أين هي في قلبه من الأوبرا التي عندنا؟! أربعون عامًا وهو يمرُّ أمامها كلما ذهب أو جاء من ميدان العتبة.
