The grandfather's name was never used among us; it would have sounded strange had we heard it, and no one in the village called him by it. He was only ever 'His Honour the Omda' or 'Abu al-Hajj'.

I hear that one of them has died and his face presses on me night and day; I drift with him into the distant past, and things of his from thirty, forty years ago float up before me, trifles and miniatures I never imagined existed in memory, as though the man were alive inside me without my feeling it.

Poor grandfather: had it not been for his light head, he would have been a sheikh of al-Azhar or one of the great preachers, not a laughing-stock on people's lips and a ragamuffin of the streets.
