To the beautiful one, Port Said,
and to her people who lived with me and I with them,
who loved me and whom I loved:
Azzam Bey, chief of the Arab District station; the hero Mursal; the martyr Hossam; Captain Atef; Major Karam Ghattas; Hajj Allam; Tudri, the kindest waiter I ever saw; and dear Soliman, “Soli” as we called him, Egyptian to the marrow in soul, heart and wit, though his roots were French and most of his family lived in Lyon and across France.
That hero fell defending Egypt in the war of liberation.
Peace upon all their souls,
and peace upon the martyrs of the 1973 war and of every war, in Sinai, in Port Said and in all Egypt,
and upon all who witnessed the tragedies of war and bore even its lightest burden.
About the novel
On 1 August 1968 a young lieutenant, Tariq, arrives by bus from Cairo in Port Said, a city on the front line of the War of Attrition, to serve at the Arab District station under Azzam Bey, its volcanic, soft-hearted chief. From the wicker chairs of the Gianola on Gumhuriya Street, where the Greek-born Uncle Tudri presides, and from Hajj Allam’s Fallah café, the narrator recalls the station’s comedy and tenderness, the raids and the funerals, a city emptying “as a perfume bottle empties”, and a love left unfinished. A novel drawn from the author’s own first years of service, dedicated to Port Said, its people and its martyrs.
From its pages
Port Said 68
He was asleep on a stone bench beside the tomb, and a strange sleep it was: head between his arms, knees drawn up to the middle of his belly, the posture of a foetus in its mother's womb. Feelings unrelated to one another came over me, pity upon astonishment upon curiosity upon sorrow, and it never crossed my mind that this human being would one day stand by me in a way I could never forget.
All he owned was five buffaloes; they found four in his pen and the fifth shot dead in the drainage canal. The poor thing had slipped out of the pen and dived into the canal to bathe, and it was we who gunned her down! The case was filed against persons unknown.
That is what Port Said did to us: she made us run seven or eight years ahead of our age, and know that there is something in this world as dear as our fathers and mothers.
Day after day an intimacy grew between me and the place. The streets: Eugénie Street and al-Talatini, or Kisra and Muhammad Ali, and houses from the thirties and forties of the last century, the kindly, gentle houses with their arcades and wooden balconies, and the shops of al-Tugari Street no bigger than cigarette packets, each holding a thousand and one kinds of goods.
God willing we'll win, and everything will go back the way it was.
My grief was sharpest for one child among the victims: he lay stretched on a pavement with his hands around his head, gone from this life. He died of a moment of fear; he fell as he ran in terror from the screaming of the planes and his head struck the kerb. He was killed by the villain in Ray-Ban glasses circling high above, and a blind, heartless pavement shared in the deed.
