And an old woman who stands all day at the café entrance behind a table of socks, handkerchiefs and women's wares bared her head without meaning to, without even noticing, and let out a trill of joy that rang through the sky; before we knew it we were all clapping for her.

My grief was sharpest for one child among the victims: he lay stretched on a pavement with his hands around his head, gone from this life. He was killed by the villain in Ray-Ban glasses circling high above, and a blind, heartless pavement shared in the deed.

Uncle Tudri is one of us: his blood is our blood and his ways are our ways, the good and the bad; the same kindness, the same hot-blooded gallantry and the manners of the sons of the country, and the same chatter too, the swearing by God in truth and in falsehood, the nose poked into other people's business.
