وكانت لنا صورة معًا بالأبيض والأسود أسفل زجاج التسريحة، هي بثوب بلا أكمام وأنا في حجرها، فعلت المستحيل لتخرجها من موضعها غير أن الصورة أبت، فبفعل الزمن أمسكت بالزجاج وصارا كُلًّا واحدًا.

There was a black-and-white photo of us together under the glass of the dressing table—she in a sleeveless dress and I in her lap. She did the impossible to prise it out, but the photo refused: with time it had gripped the glass and the two had become one.

فهل فينا شيء يعمل بمعزل عنا؟! شيء بصره حديد، يرى لحظة ما نرى، غير أنه يرى لنا ما لا نراه، وعندما تكون الساعة ساعة خاطر وتذكُّر يلوح لنا بما رآه..

طفقت أسأل نفسي للمرة الألف، من أنا؟! ولمن أنتمي؟! ولماذا أنا من دون الناس خرجت من رحم يهودية وظهر شهيد؟!

For the thousandth time I began asking myself: who am I? To whom do I belong? And why, of all people, did I come from a Jewish womb and the loins of a martyr?
