وعندما تجاوزنا مدينة الإسماعيلية وأصبحنا بحذاء القناة وَجَم كل الباص، وطفق الركاب ينظرون لبعضهم البعض ومنهم من يتأمل من النافذة بحسرة، كان العدوُّ على الضفَّة الثانية ويقيم سدًّا بيننا وبينه (خط بارليڤ)، ومركب غارقة في مجرى القناة نصفها مطمور في الماء والنصف الآخر مرفوع إلى أعلى وتعلوه أسراب من طائر النَّوْرَس
